An August Man Curated Selection of Spring / Summer 2010 Sandals

July 5, 2010

In the genealogy of footwear, the leather sandal is probably the forefather of all soles. Once associated with gladiators and Greek gods, they are now an essential fashion staple for summer. Stylish, comfortable and more importantly, cool (in every sense of the word), menswear designers love to send their own spin on the sandal down runways every year. Here is a August Man curated selection of Spring/Summer ’10 sandals for men.

Lanvin Macramé and Leather Sandal

Lanvin’s menswear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver, isn’t one to shy away from the unconventional. This black leather sandal sports an enclosed heel with a black leather strap that lies across the toes and stitched to black cord; various threads, cords and ribbons are intricately woven to form a macramé pattern along the foot. The use of materials that would look more common on a sailboat then on one’s feet isntantly transforms a basic leather sandal into instant eccentric chic.

Marc Jacobs Gladiator Sandal

2000 years on and gladiator sandals are still a huge hit. If you’re looking for a classic shape for summer and want to avoid looking like Russell Crowe, these leather lace-up sandals by Marc Jacobs might be the pair for you. In modern gladiator style, the sandal features folded diagonal straps and leather laces on a flat black leather sole and footbed.

Dries Van Noten Cotton and Leather Sandal

Dries Van Noten has always been dedicated to the idea of the world traveller and this cotton and leather sandal doesn’t stray an inch from that vision. Lending a touch of ethnic sophistication to breezy resort style, navy leather straps that cross over the foot are accented with cotton embroiderery, while the printed cotton insole is reminiscent of vintage Hawaiian motifs.

Acne Tour Low Sandal

In signature Acne ethos, the Swedish cult label presented their Tour Low sandal as an effortlessly cool must-have for summer time living. Made from 100% leather with an interior leather zip fastening, the sandal adopts a retro, yet contemporary style that works equally well with shorts or trousers.
