Audemars Piguet’s Grand Prix

June 29, 2010

The Pininfarina of the watch world is the 79-year-old Gérald Genta, who has created iconic pieces for the likes of Patek Philippe and IWC. But perhaps his most famous design is the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet. It was first launched in 1972 and the decision to launch a haute horlogerie stainless-steel sports timepiece at a moment when the entire Swiss watch industry was collectively cowering in the face of the threat posed by Japanese quartz technology was seen as perverse.

Thanks, however, to Genta’s instant classic design, AP’s counterintuition hit the jackpot and created a whole new market for luxury sports watches, which is still one of the most lucrative sectors of the industry today.
